Final Project
Hello sustainers!
Here, you can see our final project on sustainability.

Top 3 Sustainability Applications Used at Bilkent University
1) Recyclable Course Materials
In nature, cardboard boxes have an expiration time of 5 years and plastic waste over 1000 years. Course materials such as project tools and plastic silicone guns, which are made of cardboard and not completely used, are left in the reusable materials section designated by the students. Instead of acquiring these materials again, students of other semesters reduce the use of materials with a very long extinction time by reusing the items of previous periods, thus contributing to environmental sustainability.
2) Meeting Energy Needs from Natural Resources
Although recyclable energy sources are not very efficient yet, a significant part of the energy produced is inefficient and has to be released because it cannot be used, but these energies are consumed in parts with low demand. For example, the heating process of the pool, which must be actively reached 30 degrees throughout the year, is provided by using the energy stored on sunny days by the solar panel placed on the roof of the sports hall, instead of using fossil fuels that are harmful to the environment, such as natural gas.
3) Reusable Secondhand Clothing
Bilkent Fashion Group organized a clothing exchange week. During this week, people changed their second-hand clothes with each other and contributed to sustainability instead of increasing the existing consumption by buying new ones.

5 Innovative Sustainability Solutions likely to be used at Bilkent University
1) Vehicle Fuel Consumption Warning to Reduce Air Pollution
Today, many vehicles still use fossil fuels. In order to reduce the use of these fuels, which cause air pollution and harm environmental sustainability, it is planned by the university administration that the cars that are stopped but working will be penalized after a certain period of time.
2) Encouraging the Consumption of Energy Types
It is planned that electric vehicles will spend less on expenditure items such as sticker payments. In this way, renewable energy will be supported, and green sustainability will be ensured by improving weather conditions.
3) Hydroelectric Power Generation in the Lake
Hydroelectric energy can be produced by setting up a dam in the natural lake on the eastern campus, taking advantage of the water level difference, which provides green energy production. Thus, fossil fuel consumption is reduced, and green sustainability is contributed.
4) Achieve a Zero Footprint for Campus Organizations
It is possible to examine different aspects.
- 4.1 Buildings
Do structures waste energy and fail to recycle their waste? Or are buildings accredited with reputable sustainability standards and also have solar panels, strong insulation, waste separation, or energy-efficient lighting?
- 4.2 Labs
Exist any efforts to lessen the effects that laboratories have on the environment? How can the rectorate assist researchers in setting up green labs?
5) Monitoring
Our university received 0 waste awards from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, but there is no reality in place monitoring report for sustainability targets. The Rectorate does not calculate a sustainability report or carbon footprint, or if it does, it does not share it. Enforcement of this and its supervision by any other observers increase its feasibility and continuity of sustainability operations.
